Fashion: Ferragamo Returns To Its Roots In L.A

Although he was born in Southern Italy, Salvatore Ferragamo owes quite a bit to Southern California. He got here to Los Angeles in 1923 as a young man in his 20s, first designing sneakers for films corresponding to “The Ten Commandments,” then opening the Hollywood Boot Shop at Hollywood Boulevard and Las Palmas. There, he built the inspiration for today’s world luxury brand by becoming cobbler to the stars.

Sophia Loren, Marilyn Monroe, Joan Crawford, Gloria Swanson and Audrey Hepburn have been shoppers. He even studied anatomy on the University of Southern California to learn how to make his shoes extra comfortable, before returning to Italy in 1927 and settling in Florence, where he targeted on growing visionary designs such because the cage and the wedge heels.

Ferragamo died in 1960, but his identify lives on in the household-run enterprise. His eldest daughter in particular, the late Fiamma Ferragamo, carried on her father’s legacy for invention, by developing with the basic bow-front “Vara” pump in 1978.

There will be friends dressed in glittering red-carpet gowns designed by the model’s creative director, Massimiliano Giornetti; a runway present of his spring 2014 assortment, which debuted simply weeks in the past in Milan; and a monthlong pop-up store of special pieces created just for Los Angeles.
